I have now eaten my way through New York with no shame twice this year.
Every street you walk down and every corner you turn there is another delicious smell you have to follow, a line-up of people waiting for a famed food creation or those good old classics everyone has told you about and now you just have to visit for yourself.
Balthazar is just that. My friend Marisa, first told me about it when she went to NYC last summer. Then Kate and Rebekah and Steve and Alex, who we were with this time. After four recommendations and counting, it had to be incroyable.
We started off with cocktails and I got a fruity creation made with passionfruit puree. Delicieux.
Balthazar offers French cuisine, which can be felt through out your whole experience. Almost like you hopped on a plane and are sat in a Parisian cafe for a few hours – although the thick New York accents quickly burst that bubble. I chose a Salmon dish (I could never pronounce the name and now I can’t remember it!) but it was something I had never seen before so it seemed like a good idea to be adventureux. And in the hands of Balthazar’s local chef, Shane McBride, it couldn’t be too far from drool worthy.
Yup. It definitely got you salivating. The monster sized salmon on my plate was wrapped in rice and cabbage then tucked in with a pastry shell and doused with the most amazing mushroom cream sauce. I have no words.
